Youth Programs Teacher
Position Summary:
Teach basic courses and life skills to prepare program participants (ages 16 to 24) to obtain their General Equivalency Diploma (GED), adapting curriculum as necessary to motivate participants, overcome obstacles and accommodate learning style. The goal will be to have 80% of the participants remain in the program and obtain their GEDs, increase the numeracy/literary skills of those young adults who are deficient in at least one educational functioning level and place participants on career paths that leads to completion of secondary education; post-secondary education; technical schools and other institutions of higher learning; apprenticeships, and/or the military.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Instruct participants individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions and demonstrations and instructional materials to meet participants' varying needs, abilities and interests. 2. Work with participants, their parents and Case Managers in two programs, in a team approach, in the following areas: a. Assess each participant’s learning style. b. Investigate current educational issues (including any credit deficiencies and basic skill level performance) in light of participants’ short and long term educational goals. c. Determine the most effective educational strategy and assistance to meet those goals and needs (e.g., credit retrieval for high school reentry, basic skills instruction to increase foundation skills, or GED preparation courses). d. Document participant’s Individual Service Strategy (ISS). e. Support parents in helping their children achieve the identified goals. 3. For participants enrolled in school, contact appropriate school district personnel, obtain any needed records (such as transcripts) and work with participant’s teachers to ensure that educational strategies in the ISS are coordinated with OIC team members and appropriate school district staff. 4. Prepare appropriate lessons to improve participants’ basic and life skills and develop effective study habits. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects and communicate those objectives to participants. Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities. 5. Involve participants in individual and group activities designed to develop leadership qualities. 6. Observe and evaluate participants' work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement. Prepare and implement remedial programs for participants requiring extra help. 7. Maintain accurate and complete participant’s records as required by laws or administrative policies. 8. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the participants for whom they are responsible. 9. Prepare and administer written, oral and performance tests. Issue grades in accordance with performance. 10. Review instructional content, methods and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses. Develop recommendations for course revision, development or elimination. 11. Meet with staff and other professionals to discuss individual participant’s needs and progress. 12. Attend professional meetings, conferences and workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence and maintain teaching credentials. 13. Prepare assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisors. Assign and grade class work and homework. 14. Prepare reports on participants and activities as required by administration. 15. Participate in publicity planning, community awareness efforts and student recruitment. 16. Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, contests or other experiential activities and guide participants in learning from those activities. 17. Advise participants on internships, prospective employers, and job placement services. 18. Confer with leaders of government and community groups to coordinate student training or to find opportunities for participants to fulfill curriculum requirements. 19. Write instructional articles on designated subjects. 20. Maintain accurate and complete participant’s records as required by laws or administrative policies and maintain accurate and up to date participant’s progress system to track attainment of educational goals in the ISS. 21. Periodically meet with participants, their parents and their Youth Case Managers to discuss progress and any needed interventions. 22. Complete and maintain appropriate documentation to enroll eligible applicants for the WIA Title I-B program. Ensuring accuracy of paperwork and meeting program requirements. 23. Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
¨ Duties are performed primarily in an office setting. Noise level in this work environment is usually quiet to moderate ¨ Work requires long periods of sitting or standing, also walking, speaking, hearing, seeing and the ability to articulate clearly. ¨ Ability to work with personal computer for long periods of time.
Conditions of Employment ¨ Successfully pass a Criminal History & Background Check. ¨ Pass a pre-employment drug test. ¨ Maintain a current driver’s license and Washington State vehicle minimum insurance requirements. ¨ Employment is conditional on CEO approval. |
